I love Chinese cooking. Not only is it a source of nostalgia and comfort but I love its use of simple, often inexpensive or hanging-around-the-fridge, ingredients that can be transformed into delicious recipes with a little time and effort. Steamed buns are the perfect example. It’s a peasant dish — a morsel of dough, stuffed with whatever vegetables and filling you have on hand. Steamed buns are usually made during family gatherings and are a great example of food as a love language in Chinese cooking.

A trip to an Asian shop may be necessary to pick up spices and ingredients, such as jujube dates and Shaoxing wine. I hope these recipes will open up a world of flavour for you or maybe bring back memories of childhood as they do for me.
