Asha Wheeldon, above, started Kula Foods to bring more diverse food options to Vancouver — the flavours of Kenyan cuisine in plantbased dishes — and to build a business that aligns with her values and passion.
Influenced by many cultures, including Indian and Portuguese, Kenyan cuisine emphasizes whole, unprocessed foods, with lots of leafy vegetables such as collard greens.
On the slightly sweet side, Wheeldon makes a vegan version of a Swahili favourite called mandazi, a cardamom-flavoured mini doughnut made with coconut milk.
