Salt Spring Kitchen Co.
Saltspring Kitchen Co. offers handmade savoury, spicy and sweet jams for pairing with cheese and charcuterie. Melanie Mulherin started sharing the creations made in her home kitchen at Salt Spring Island’s Saturday market in 2012, and found a loyal following right away. Bit by bit, her little jam company grew until she moved it out of her home and into a commercial jam kitchen. Since then, Melanie has been able to share her love of canning with jam aficionados in B.C. and across the country.
The love of fine food has always been a part of Melanie's family. Her grandfather’s grocery store fed a neighbourhood, while her grandmother’s joy was entertaining dinner guests. Feeding people was an important part of family life, so it was no surprise to anyone when she married a chef. Melanie's Mother-In-Law taught her the art of preserving in the early 2000’s, and she began to experiment with recipes to make them her own. She started using her Spicy Tomato Jam in her family’s restaurant, and it is still their best-seller today.
While Melanie has outgrown her family’s kitchen, Saltspring Kitchen is still very much a family affair. Their small team ensures they produce the highest quality product. But living the west coast lifestyle means they also take time to enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds and inspires them: hiking in the woods, swimming in the ocean, relaxing on the beach, gazing at the view from a mountain… these moments are what Island life is all about, and there’s some of that wildness and freshness in every spoonful of their jams.
